These are the steps I used for the skin of my M2 Bradley model [link]
1. Basic Color - the base coat of your object

3./4. Highlight
5. Basic Texture - a basic texture can be a very common and/or random noise with less characteristic details
6. Coloring
7. Leaking Rust
8. Used Edges / More Rust
9. Ambient Occlusion - Ambient Occlusion is done automatically in a 3D tool (like Blender for me) and is just added to the existing skin (this is also well-known for character modelling/skinning).
